Kenya & Tanzania Cycle Tour

The best biking adventure in Africa!

Truely experience Kenya and Tanzania as you can only do by bike. This the real Africa, where you will encounter free roaming wildlife from your saddle, you will immerse yourself in to the culture and colour of the people, ride through vast landscapes, and camp in the wilderness under a cloudless African sky.

Nairobi to Dar es Salaam
16 Days
540 km
Moderate. A full immersion adventurous cycle tour!

Africa is vast and varied with every point of the compass unique in its own way. East Africa is no exception and is famous for its traditional tribes people, exceptional wildlife and majestic vistas.

Kenya and Tanzania is where Escape Adventures first began back in 1999 and today remains our most popular cycle tour.

Break free from the bonds of ‘normal’ on our 16 day biking and camping adventure as we travel from Nairobi in Kenya to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. You will leave the fancy hotels to the less intrepid as you bike on remote back roads away from the chaos of Nairobi city to the sudden sparseness of open savannah. We bike alongside wildlife grazing the plains and camp with local families and villages along the way. We pass beneath the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mt Kilimanjaro. Spend time game viewing in Amboseli National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, with the highest concentration of plains game in the world, then cycle through the cool rain forested Usambara Mountains before ultimately dropping down the tropical Indian Ocean coast.

Join us and fully immerse yourself into East Africa and experience the people, culture, wildlife and landscapes of this amazing continent.

Some people choose to extend their trip and follow with a trek of Mt Kilimanjaro or experience the culture and buzz of Zanzibar Island; either of which – we can point you in the right direction.

OR While you are away, why not combine your Kenya & Tanzania Cycle Tour with another one of our cycle tours on the same long-haul flight!

The Low-Down

Start: Nairobi in Kenya

Finish: Dar es Salaam in Tanzania

The Biking

Your tour itinerary offers 20-105km biking per day; a total distance of up to 540km spread over 12 days of biking.

The terrain is mostly undulating and flat with some short rolling hills. The riding surface (80% dirt roads, 15% paved roads and 5% non-technical single track) can be rough at times, slow going, pot-holed and sandy and the riding challenge of the tour should not be judged by mileage alone. The trip is suited to riders with a good level of biking fitness and off-road biking experience will greatly enhance handling on rough roads and add to the enjoyment of your tour. A mountain bike with front suspension is the ideal bike and we have a fleet of our own mountain bikes available for hire.

Support: Our trusty support vehicle carries all your luggage, has lunch, snacks and water at hand, and is there if you need a break from the saddle.

Group Size: 6-12 bikers.

Meals

Your tour leaders will take care of your meals and snacks throughout your adventure with us.  This excludes one lunch and two evening meals which are at your own cost to give you the opportunity to explore eating options of your own choosing.  We are most definitely able to cater for vegetarians and special diets and if this includes you, it is essential to advise us of this before your tour begins, so that the support vehicle can be stocked with the necessary supplies.  Typical meals include:

  • Breakfasts - Fresh fruit, muesli, toast and spreads, hot drinks.  Cooked breakfast on occasions.

  • Lunches - Picnic style lunches, fresh salads, cold meats, cheese & bread.

  • Evening Meals - Good wholesome camp-cooked meals using as much local fresh produce as possible.

Accommodation

All accommodation for the duration of your tour is included. Eleven nights are camping and four nights are in small guesthouses and lodges on a twin share basis (2-4 star).  The camping is ‘real camping’ and sometimes in remote locations. We supply spacious dome tents which we will show you how to erect, and foam mattresses. You will need to bring your own 2-3 season sleeping bag and a small travel pillow. Washing facilities & toilets are available every night. Upgrades to rooms are available at some campsites.

Singles: We do not charge a single supplement!
If you are traveling on your own, you can have your own tent for camping nights and we will pair you with another single biker of the same gender to share a twin room for the hotel nights.  If you do not wish to share, that is fine too, but a single supplement will apply!

Preparing for your Cycle Tour

Your cycle tour includes rides of up to 105km per day. Please do read about the daily riding distances taking note of the riding terrain in the itinerary below and prepare accordingly. The more prepared you are the more you will enjoy your adventure! You should be comfortable riding 3-5 times a week with regular rides of 30-50km in length. Preparing for your cycle tour should involve gravel, dirt and off-road riding, with some hills. Please do contact us if you would like some help with a detailed training plan.

Please also read our Environmental & Social Policy.  This document is all about how we, Escape Adventures, endeavor to ensure that our actions always benefit the people, communities, economies, environments and eco-systems we visit.  The following are specific ways of how we aim to make a difference in Kenya & Tanzania...

Our Kenya and Tanzania (KT) Cycle tour is our longest running tour. Our very first KT cycle tour departed from Nairobi in June 1999 and today is still our most popular tour.

Lets support Local Business

Innocent ,Joseph and the Beast Nairobi Kenya

Innocent ,Joseph and the Beast Nairobi Kenya

We charter our awesome KT support vehicle “The beast” from Innocent, a Nairobi local and a small owner/operator.  Escape Adventures is Innocent’s biggest client and we lease his vehicle for 5-8 months of the year.  In the days (sometimes hours) between tours Inno and his crew leap in to action on the beast, often working from dawn till dusk (sometimes longer) ensuring her mechanicals and services is up to spec and making sure she shines like a new one ready for each of our cycle tours!

We have employed Innocent’s his brother Joseph as our driver, interpreter and local knowledge (and fix-er) for 5+ months of the year since 2009 and he continues to be our longest standing team member.  If you have biked with us in Kenya & Tanzania in recent years you will know Joseph well!

All of the accommodation we stay in - in Kenya & Tanzania are small businesses, locally owned guesthouses, community run campsites and local families who we have made long term relationships with.

Both Kenya & Tanzania grow fabulous produce!!  Bananas, mangos, pineapple, papaya, coconuts and coffee!  Beautiful sun ripened tomatoes, avocados, peppers, cucumbers, onions, plantain… just to name a few!  We buy lots of this delicious locally grown fruit and vegetables either directly from the farmers or from local markets.  When we eat out we use small locally owned establishments that rarely see tourists.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage

Baby Elephants playing at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage

Baby Elephants playing at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi is a long standing and hugely successful trust an amazing organisation that rescues and rears orphaned elephants and other wildlife before releasing them back into the wild.

All our Kenya & Tanzania cycle tours visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage where our entry fee helps to rescue and care for orphaned elephants.  Escape Adventures also financially fosters two orphaned elephants: Kamok, a 7 year old female, orphaned at birth and Jotto, a 5 year old male orphaned after being trapped in a well.

The Giraffe Centre, Nairobi. (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife)

All of our Kenya & Tanzania family cycle tours also visit the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi which was created to preserve the endangered rothschild giraffe and is also an education centre for Kenyan school children.  As well as learning about the rothschild giraffe and the programs to preserve it - the highlight for Escape Adventures kids is getting to pet and feed the giraffes in the sanctuary.

National Parks

In East Africa where natural wildlife habitat is under threat, the National Parks and reserves provide a safe place for wild animals to live and prosper! National Park entry fees, mostly from tourists, is a vital source of funding to maintain the parks, pay the park rangers and protect the wildlife. Without this funding most of these parks and indeed any wildlife in East Africa would cease to exist.

During your Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour you will visit three national parks and reserves … Amboseli Nat Park in Kenya and the Ngorongoro crater and Saadani National Park in Tanzania.  Not only do our park fees help towards the preservation of these wild spaces and the protection of the wildlife, we also pay local operators to host and educate us and of course it provides you with the amazing opportunity to see these wonderful animals in their natural habitat.

School Visit

We have partnered with Mkuzi School in Tanzania and every year we plant 100s of new trees in a around the school

Planting trees with the kids at Mkuzi School

We have been visiting Mkuzi Primary School in the Usamabara Mountains in Tanzania on all our KT cycle tours since 2000.  The focus of our visits is to provide a mutual exchange of culture and knowledge. It is intriguing how a rural school in East Africa functions.  The children and teachers are equally intrigued to learn something about life and education systems of the countries that our bikers represent.

Back in 2004-2005, with donations from our bikers, we employed local carpenters to build more than 100 much needed new school desks for the school. While it was amazing to be able to help out; we are very careful for our relationship with this school not to become one of charity and gift giving but more a learning experience for both our bikers and the students. We are very aware of the risks and issues involved with charity and gift giving and the effect this can have with expectations and Government school funding so any assistance we give is carefully considered so as to have no negative effects in the short or long term.

Lets plant trees!

Friends Of Usambara Society is a locally instigated, non-profit grassroots organisation that uses tourism to benefit local conservation development.

In 2013 we began our relationship with Friends of Usambara.  We wanted to plant trees and help out locally - so what a great idea combining tree planting with our school visits (helping the local kids to learn to value the replanting program).  We plant 10 trees here for every biker and every crew member on our Kenya and Tanzania Cycle Tours and we have planted over 3200 trees in the last 6 years.

It really is the best way to see the real Africa.

Michelle Inglis, Nelson, NZ, 19/09/2022 12:00am

Starting our cycle adventure in Nairobi, through the African savanna, arriving at the Amboseli national park with Kilimanjaro towering above us. I thought could it get any better.... OMG yes! Camping next to a Maasai village that has no obvious roads leading to it. Meeting the families that live in the village and interacting with the kids. What a magical place. A memory I will never forget. Across the boarder to Tanzania and biking towards the Rift Valley escarpment. Wow what a ride, passing elephants and giraffes. A well earnt day off to enjoy the Ngorongoro crater. Heading of towards the coast through small villages of the Maasai Steppe, beautiful big smiles that welcomed us, all wanting to meet and say Jumbo. Exploring the Usambara Mountains. Before heading back down towards the coast to Bagamoyo. The views, the people, the animals the accommodation, and oh yeah the biking with new friends. Absolutely amazing. Fabulous memories of beautiful friendly, welcoming and often astounded faces. It was the best 555km of cycling ever. It really is the best way to see the real Africa.

Wild-life in the wild, people, and culture!

Zeeb McNicol, New Zealand, 24/12/2020 12:00am

The Kenya Tanzania Escape Adventure was fantastic. I would do it again and highly recommend it if you want to experience wild-life in the wild, the people, and the culture! It was Kiwi style experience in Africa; fun, everyone pitching in and something new every day. Our group size was small which made it so much more personal. Camping meant we were off the beaten track, meeting locals and the food produced from the back of the "Beast", our support truck, excellent. Their custom made bikes were easy to use, comfortable and well maintained. A truly memorable experience with wonderful guides.

Waiting for Giraffes to cross!

Shelley Groves, New Zealand, 23/12/2020 12:00am

Joey and I had the most incredible trip to Kenya and Tanzania during June of 2019. The information and helpfulness from Mandy in the office, to the actual bike tour with John and the crew, is a testament to them offering an experience of a lifetime and living up to it. We felt we had an authentic African experience - can't get much more real than waiting for giraffes to cross the track and watching tribesmen herd their goats in to the village for the night at sunset. Next on the list is Madagascar with Escape Adventures of course!

Remote places and villages to meet local people

Ross McLelland, Jervios Bay, Australia, 10/12/2020 12:00am

I had a fantastic kind of once in a lifetime cycling trip through Kenya and Tanzania with Escape Adventures. The unique advantage they provided to me was going to remote places and villages to meet local people and see their way of life. We were often the only European looking people for days. Plus the wildlife close-up such as huge elephants coming up to our truck. But the best was cycling along this dirt track in the middle of nowhere and having to stop to give way to a family of giraffes intent on keeping on their way regardless of we cyclists!

Went to places we would never have gone

Mandy May, New Zealand, 09/12/2020 12:00am

I booked with Escape Adventures an amazing biking holiday through Kenya and Tanzania...it was well organised, guides were amazing, they took us places we would never have gone before. Absolutely loved it!  I also did 2 days on Timber Trail with them...it was fabulous. They are professional, positive, fun..can't recommend them enough.

Would do another tour with these guys anytime.

Kerry Ludbrook, New Zealand, 02/12/2020 12:00am

Did a mountain bike tour from Kenya to Tanzania and had a ball. Everything was well taken care of and lots of fun had. Clearly it would have taken a long time to find the route we travelled. Would do another tour with these guys anytime.

Organised to Perfection

    Makaw , USA, 01/12/2020 12:00am

I went on the Escape Adventures Africa trip and it was absolutely incredible! A total stand out and organised to perfection! The team is professional, the gear is great and they just know how to make tours fun, social and inclusive! I highly, highly recommend!

I'd do it again tomorrow!

    Peta Grant, Australia, 28/09/2019 11:00pm

Any adventure that is linked with some challenges, taking you out of your comfort zone is usually connected with that great word..."Rewarding"! To see parts of Africa at bike level & bike speed, interacting with locals, children & wildlife was just amazing. I'll be hard pressed to get in a safari vehicle again, especially as my bike was sooo good, mine at home is going on the verge! Great food, Tim, Theresa and Joseph were organised, relaxed & clearly in sync with each other...& Africa! I'd do it again tomorrow!

A truely remarkable and rewarding way to travel!

    Debbie Neale, 10/09/2019 7:16pm

My thanks to the Escape Adventures team for the most wonderful trip I had recently in Kenya and Tanzania. What a well organised trip you guys have put together – full on and experience plus. I cannot praise Perryn and Alice enough. What a well oiled machine they both were and how hard they worked. They worked together incredibly well, were always smiling and always supportive. No mean feat with 12 personalities to deal with and the uncertainties that Africa can throw. Nothing fazed them and we were incredibly well looked after and feed. You guys are awesome …. and get a bouquet from me! The biking came with many challenges, but what a truely remarkable and rewarding way to travel, experience and share. If you are thinking of a bike trip - I cannot recommend Escape Adventures more highly. Cheers to the whole team Kenya/Tanzania - Mandy, John, Perryn, Alice, Joseph and of course, Smiley!

Unforgettable from Dawn to Dusk!

    Grace Vaate, Blenheim, 10/09/2019 12:00am

As a young woman of 70+ years I have thoroughly enjoyed my recent Kenya & Tanzanian cycle tour.  It was unforgettable adventure from dawn to dusk!  On the bike we explored areas far from the beaten tourist track and visited places only known to the locals.  Accommodation upgrades along the route was an added bonus and I explored them all.  Age is not a barrier to go  but you must enjoy adventures, and surprises and not be daunted by the unexpected.  All along the way, our very competent tour leaders were our guides, cooks, mechanics, decision makers and encouragers.  It has been a wonderful experience to taste Africa this way!

The real Africa, on a bicycle!

    Ronald Bass, 05/09/2019 10:48pm

Why do we go to Africa? To experience something completely different from our comfortable civilized lives. After reviewing the available African cycling tours, this one looked like the best opportunity to see the real Africa, not just tourist Africa, and it fully met my expectations. Of course you want to see the big game in it's natural setting, but also a raw undeveloped culture totally different from ours. This trip covers it all, two major game parks, and a fair amount of wildlife elsewhere along the ride. Cycling is far from normal tourist venues, on remote paved roads and many many unpaved back roads well away from traffic and urban settings. Interacting with the people in remote villages, a mountain school visit and a few towns. Topography ranges from plains full of acacia trees and the occasional gazelle and giraffe to impressive mountains and rain forest to beautiful tropical beaches. Frequent encounters with cattle sheep and goats. The tour ends in the incredibly historic town of Bagamoyo (slave trade, explorers, German colonialism, World War I), which I took a day to tour, guide arranged for me by the last hotel, Travelers Lodge. The tour support is excellent. The well-designed support truck takes care of gear luggage, bikes, kitchen, water and people, and is available when you want a break from cycling, particularly helpful for me at age 75. The camping gear is comfortable. Food prepared by the guides is tasty, nutritious and varied, complemented by a sampling of local food in a number of restaurant meals. The guides provided expert bike maintenance and dealt effectively with the few inevitable occasions where something did not go as planned. The Real African way of Life

Mark & Linda Roberts, New Zealand, 20/08/2019 12:00am

Absolutely loved our Kenya/Tanzania July/August 2019 cycle trip. Such an awesome life changing experience. Our crew (Joseph, Perryn and Alice) were fantastic and helped to make this experience so memorable. Loved their banter and laughter. Learnt and saw so so much (such a huge variety each day experiencing new things). The crew never failed to surprise us everyday. The food coming out of “The Beast” was incredible-always fresh and plentiful. The people, places, interaction with local villages was so personal and touching. Such an awesome way to really get to see and feel how the locals lived. I would totally recommend this experience with Escape Adventures for those wanting an epic cycling adventure meeting locals at grass root levels, and experiencing the real African way of life. Thank you Escape Adventures for this fabulous experience.

We love an adventure!

    Wendy Norwood, 17/07/2019 3:56pm

Just to express our thanks to the Escape Adventures team for creating such a fabulous trip. You really have done an amazing job of putting together all the aspects that make for such a memorable adventure. John and the two new guides – Alice and Perryn – were the best. A great way to connect with a foreign country and its people, nature and an interesting group of fellow adventurers who love to be on a bike! We're not usually group trip people but this adventure was one I wouldn't miss!

Exciting and Fulfulling!

    Mary Stebbings, 09/07/2019 6:44pm

We absolutely enjoyed our cycling tour with Escape Adventures and the communication with Mandy planning the trip has been perfect. Our tour leaders worked hard throughout the entire trip and did everything possible to make our tour exciting and fulfilling.

Want to see what an amazing world we live in

    Stephen Finich, 12/10/2018 7:11pm

Hi to all the prospective travellers! When you check out the Escape Adventure web site I have assumed that you have a wonder lust. Well lucky you you have arrived. I have done three trips with Escape Adventure and I really cannot put into words all I have seen. I’m not a person who likes going to the places that are typical tourist spots...that said I do enjoy a certain comfort level, I also enjoy people. Escape Adventures trips tick every box for me. The places I have seen the life long friends I have made and getting the opportunity to see how people live in the world is for me is priceless. I’m not going to ramble on but I do urge you to book a trip (put your toe in the water) give these guys a go you will be safe, comfortable and amazed at how good these trips will be. Hopefully I’ll meet you on my next trip, and there will be more trips for me. Hasta lueago amigos.

Asante sana Escape Adventures we really loved the Kenya to Tanzania tour 2018. We wanted to do something a bit more adventurous to celebrate turning 50, this tour was that and so much more. A wonderful tour that made discovering Africa so enjoyable. The best experiences, stunning scenery, amazing wildlife, great camping spots and accommodation, fantastic tour leaders who looked after us and fed us sooo well, the best driver and a great bunch of fellow riders. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We are definitely keen to escape to another destination in the future!

Kerry Gentleman on tour in Kenya"We've got the Escape Adventures bug!"

"We’ve got the Escape Adventures bug! Recently my husband and I went on the Kenya/Tanzania cycle tour and what an awesome trip it was! It was great to be able to travel in developing countries with someone else having organised all the logistics. We were continually amazed that every day brought new surprises and experiences while avoiding the usual tourist circuits. We loved that the trip supported local people at a grassroots level and was absolutely unique. The small group size also made for a great atmosphere.  Now – which country shall we visit next with Escape Adventures….."

"Thank you for sharing Africa your way"

"Jambo Mandy and John.  We are safely back home after an amazing and wonderful trip. Emma, Jason and Joseph were superb guides/cooks/organisers/driver and became our friends very quickly. Emma's food was a standout - as were all those amazing locations you had found for your trippers to stay. The night under the rock was truly awesome - and all the organising of bikes, hotels before and after the trip - just fantastic. Thank you for sharing Africa your way - it was an experience of a lifetime and one we will treasure and never forget. Thank you thank you, cheers from Simon and Sue.

"One of those Incredible Life Experiences"

"Words escape me to say what a brilliant and awesome trip it was in every way. I loved every minute of it. It is one of those incredible life experiences. The commitment, professionalism, organisation, and unwavering effort and work by John, Emma and Jason at all times was always beyond the call. And Joseph is a special guy; don’t ever lose him."

Paul Rushworth, Brisbane, Australia.

Janet Charlie Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour"You under sell and over deliver"

"Thanks so much for taking us on such a wonderful journey through Kenya and Tanzania full of adventurous fun, contrasting cultural experiences with the Masaii Tribes that were far beyond our expectations, fine cuisine created effortlessly by Emma, great company, and enjoyable times had by all.  We felt very safe while biking in remote areas and the fully equipped truck we travelled in is exceptionally well equipped for all conditions.   This is our second Escape Adventures tour and we believe you ‘under sell and over deliver’ in all aspects of the trip."

Janet & Charlie Leith. Blenheim, New Zealand

Kathy Reichenbach Kenya Tanzania cycle tour"The feeling of satisfaction and achievement outweighed everything else"

"Thank you for providing the opportunity for us to travel to these amazing countries, meeting the friendly local people and take in the sights, game parks etc.  At times we certainly challenged ourselves on the bikes, and crawling into the tent some nights we knew we had done a good days ride.  Even though stuffed the feeling of satisfaction and achievement outweighed everything else, and we were up early next day to do it all again. The sand, wind and rough roads from yesterday were forgotten as we biked off.  Emma's cooking was amazing, what she could do with the gas cooker was unbelievable and eating was almost a highlight over biking…(well not quite but very close)..  It is a challenging ride, but achievable by a wide age range if you put in sufficient training. I will definitely recommend it to friends, as it’s a fantastic way to see both countries.  And see a different side of life than the average tourist."

Kathy Reichenbach. Gisborne, New Zealand.

Amazing cycle tour

"Has set the bar for adventures to come"

"The only way to fully understand how incredible our experience would be to try it yourself. Sixteen days that will always be remembered. An amazing trip that has set the bar high for adventures to come. In a league all it’s own."

Ernie & Anita Winch, Canada

We can not recomment Escape Adventures highly enough

"11 out of 10"

"Prior to meeting John, we had never considered a cycling trip for a holiday. From the moment we booked until the last day of cycling, we had the most personable and enjoyable experience. The camping, the scenery, the animals, the people and the riding all contribute to memories that will last a life time. We can not recommend Escape Adventures highly enough and we've already got our eye on at least one of their other trips. 11 out of 10!"

Chris Paola & Melissa Reekie, Australia

Thanks for organising an incredible cycle tour

"Everything was brilliant"

"Hi Mandy, The trip was amazing!! Everything about it was brilliant.  The Escape Leaders were all incredible and lots of fun.  We had a great group..lots of interesting personalities, all managed beautifully by the team.  The cooking was amazing! Thanks again for organising such an incredible experience."

Jenny & Peter Talbot, Australia

Bill Day2"Outstanding!"

"Our cycle tour was outstanding!  It was certainly a “trip of a lifetime” and I was constantly saying to myself what an utter privilege it was to experience this. I have some glimmering of understanding of how much effort has gone into finding and selecting the routes and camping places. There is no way that we would have seen the sights we did without all the great work you did. I thought the route selection was amazing. The balance of riding days with rest/game touring days was perfect. You should be very proud of what you have created.

I need to make some specific comments to your team. We were probably not an easy or compliant group but those two were not remotely concerned and simply focused upon giving us the trip that we wanted ….and giving it to the highest possible standard. I can’t praise them enough. They were amazing…incredibly hardworking, perfect and considerate hosts, totally focused on giving us the best experience possible, flexible enough to meet any of our requests, always upbeat and pleasant……I could go on forever."

Bill Day. Wanaka, New Zealand

Your Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour far exceeded our expectations

"Just an amazing holiday"

"Your Tanzania & Kenya bike tour far exceeded our expectations. It was a wonderful enlightening cultural experience. Just an amazing holiday! We have been thinking of words like ethical, epic, cultural, sustainable, grassroots, amazing, surprising, healthy, relaxing, revitalising, restful, refreshing and there may be a few other to describe our holiday but have decided words alone cannot adequately describe our bike tour. You simply just have to take the tour.

We will remember this holiday for a long time and will encourage anyone who is prepared to listen to book a spot on one of your future tours.  We know you now have at least 8 (but I suspect there are many more) very satisfied clients."

"I am a cynic and rarely impressed by business, and when I am it's usually small business. Escape Adventures stands at the head of my tiny class of business excellence in value-for-money, for personal service, for ethics, for walking the walk. My wife and I have done three tours with "Escape" and their high standards never changed. If you really do want something different, away from the over-groomed touring routes of the world, away from the 5-star grooming of hotels and spas....try any one of the escape adventures. You'll find unforgettable geography, some of it exotic, some of it pastoral; you'll also make very memorable contact with the local culture in their food, their families, their homes, their way of life.
This honour and respect for the culture is, we feel, a unique value-added of Escape Adventures. But not the only one. Because the owners of the company are with you, or if not, are intimately connected with your tour. They seem able, and very willing, to make impromptu changes to the touring program to take advantage of sights and situations you'll find which may not be highlighted in the brochures. Bike touring as it should be."

Your Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour promised to show us the real Africa

"Excellent, Unforgettable & Challenging"

"Firstly I wanted to reiterate Kirsty’s sentiments: Excellent, unforgettable and challenging. We are delighted we did it.  We really had a wonderful time. Your Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour promised to give us many and varied experiences of “real Africa” and to that end your trip delivered in spade loads. Our tour leaders were exceptional young people in so many ways. The meals were just divine.  We have many wonderful memories from the trip and it was quite unlike any other holiday we have had - all strength to you and John and your fearless leaders. We are telling anyone and everyone of our adventure and of your company".

Kenya & Tanzania is a must do tour"A must do trip"

"You hear many myths about Africa... the lions will get you; It's too dangerous, etc... The truth is - it’s a really safe place to visit. Our tour is well organized and so different from how most of us live.  If you have any curiosity about other cultures, it’s a must do trip.  I’ve done other cycle trips where we stayed in hotels and ended the day in luxury. These trips have claimed to get you beside the local people and culture - but in reality you don’t and you often feel you have missed out. This trip was the complete opposite, you do really get a sense of how these lovely people live and you certainly get to see it all unravel before your eyes."

Stephen Finch, New Zealand

Most amazing East Africa biking holiday"the trip of a lifetime for us"

"Hi Mandy.  We have had a most amazing time here in East Africa and cant believe it is all over already. My what we have seen, smelled and experienced.....the trip of a life time for us four and we know Stephen and Roman feel the same.  Thanks to yourself and John for an amazing opportunity.  Thanks Baz, Gemma and Joseph - an awesome trip. Who would believe homemade gourmet meals could come out of the back of a truck in the middle of nowhere day after day?  And who would have thought we would be biking right beside gazelle and zebra - oh! and giraffe? Thanks for all your knowledge you shared. We loved every minute of the trip.....even the bull dust"

Julie Hamilton, New Zealand

Kenya & Tanzania - a bucket list cycle tour!"Bucket List trip"

"We had an amazing trip! Gemma, Baz and Joseph make an awesome team and nothing is a problem. With Gemma's food I thought I might even come home heavier then I went away!!  At times it almost felt surreal cycling across the plains, seeing giraffe and zebra grazing. This was our bucket list trip and more then exceeded our expectations. A must do for anyone."

Our cycle trip from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam trip of a lifetime

"So many special experiences"

"Full trip of Kiwi's and Aussie's had the time of our lives with Escape Adventures when we joined their cycle trip from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam in June/July 2014. Baz and Gemma work their butts off to provide a trip of a lifetime, with so many special experiences along the way. If you love off-road cycling, you MUST see East Africa this way."

Karen Hall, Australia

Our African cycle tour was amazing!

"The whole experience was amazing!"

"Hi Mandy,  I have not enough superlatives to describe our trip!  Baz, Gemma and Joseph were fantastic. The whole experience was amazing!  Many many thanks."

Nichola Wood, Australia

There was nothing we didnt like about the cycle tour"Wow - your tour was brilliant"

"WOW did we have any amazing time – so much to tell and show people but all I can say is that your tour was brilliant. The blue truck/bus is just a blast – being so self-contained for us to eat and drink from was truly perfect. We all agreed that having the drinking water available was superb – it just tasted like our own drinking water here at home. Baz, Gemma and Joseph were just superb – they work so well together and everything Gemma cooked was scrummy. Quite unbelievable really considering the restricted amenities etc – there was nothing we didn’t like about your tour … So I congratulate you both on what must be extremely difficult logistics planning to get these rides sorted and finalised in these amazing countries."

Challenging cycling

"Most amazing trip"

"A "big thank you" for our adventure through Kenya and Tanzania. It was the most amazing trip and one that I would highly recommend to other people. The cycling was challenging at times, awe-inspiring and life-changing.  Truly amazing. John, Baz and Gemma were awesome. The food was delicious and nourishing. The bikes were great.  Thanks so much for an amazing trip."

Alison Murray, New Zealand

The cycle trip went like clockwork

"Most rewarding and enjoyable"

"Paul and I agreed it was an amazing holiday, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Big raps to Gemma, Baz and Joseph - they were outstanding throughout and all worked like trojans to make sure all went smoothly and that we were well looked after.  The trip went like clockwork which is no mean feat in Africa and it was down to their hard work and dedication that we all had such an extraordinary time. The itinerary was great... every day offered something new and exciting and getting to places like Solomans rock, Amboseli National Park and the Usambara Mountains were definite highlights... I will definitely be recommending this trip to anyone who cares to listen and cannot really fault any part of it. Thanks again to you and all the team at Escape Adventures for making the last 3 weeks some of the most rewarding and enjoyiable of my life!!

Andrew Sullivan, New Zealand

Africa Cycle Tour a special experience"Absolutely loved the trip"

"I absolutely loved the trip and will be recommending it to everyone that i speak to. It is a very special experience and I believe that I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity. In particular Soloman's Camp is in my opinion an iconic spot that rivals such places as Santorini. I would also like to say that Baz, Gemma and Joseph were outstanding. They made a special trip perfect with their attitude, personalities and hard work. You are very fortunate to have the three of them working for you. Many thanks for a great trip."

Paul Gooby, New Zealand

Thanks for the wonderful Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour"Best holiday we ever had"

"Best holiday we have ever had, so different, getting off the beaten track. The people along the way were amazingly friendly and welcoming.  Many thanks for the wonderful experience. We will never forget it."

Amazing cycle trip!

"A life Changing experience"

"The trip was amazing in so many ways for me. From start to finish the trip was physically challenging, visually stimulating, unique and a life changing experience. One I won't forget!  The uniqueness of Escape Adventures trip gave us the opportunity to experience some of the 'off the beaten track' places which has allowed me to leave East Africa with a better understanding of the Kenyan and Tanzaian people and their cultures.

Bridget Robinson, New Zealand

I cant imagine not travelling by bike

"I can't imagine another way"

"My husband and I have done six cycle tours with Escape Adventures. After our first bike trip ever in Kenya in 2003 we learned that this is the way we want to travel. Not only do you come home in better shape than when you left but you will have actively engaged with the culture and people of a new land. Instead of passing by in a bus you may play an impromptu game of Simon Says with several hundred elementary students who have run out to cheer you on in Kenya, or you may try your hand at threshing rice in China, or meet an elderly widow in Laos who desperately wants to have you stay and visit. Then again an ostrich may wander through your picnic spot in Africa, followed by several giraffes. The trips are not regimented, events unfold differently every day as you have the opportunity to stop and interact with people you meet, there is no schedule that must be met. And if a day isn’t unfolding as it should there is always the option of catching a ride with the driver and enjoying the scenery for a while. Another important part of Escape Adventure’s trips is that they make sure that you stay in locally owned hotels and eat at locally owned restaurants, in this way the local people benefit from our tourism. I can’t imagine any other way to see the world than from a bike , exploring with Escape Adventures."

Janice & Jay Pritchard, Canada

I regard my Escape Adventures trip to Africa as the trip of a lifetime."A true privilege"

"I regard my Escape Adventures trip to Africa as the trip of a lifetime.  I grew up seeing images of Africa and African wildlife.  Day one of our ride out of Nairobi we crested a hill and encountered hundreds of zebra and wildebeest grazing on the plain below.  To ride through the herd within 50 metres of animals I had only seen on TV was a surreal experience.  The opportunity to speak with the Masai people and hear stories about their land and their lives was a true privilege that few people can share."

Mark Kelley, Australia

An incredible holiday and looking to our next cycle tour"An incredible journey"

"Hi John and Mandy. What an incredible journey we have had! Every day had different scenery and terrain that we wouldn’t have thought possible. You managed to find every cool place and sneaky route that only locals would know about. Our tour leaders provided a wonderful atmosphere for us to explore and enjoy every day. An incredible holiday and looking to our next adventure."

Jude & Tony Anker, New Zealand

"The range of experience and type of cycling routes exceeded my expectations and I know it must have taken a lot on planning, research and background knowledge. The routes were obviously designed to give cyclists the best experiences possible and this could only have been done by those with a deep interest and love of cycling."

"A privilege to visit the African continent with vast stretches of wilderness and a honour to be welcomed warmly into a foreign culture, truly equating to a magical experience one can only live to believe it happened.  I am very grateful to yourself and John and your three exceptional staff in Africa for enabling to make this adventure a reality. Cycling is indeed a wonderful way travel East Africa"Exceeded my expectations in every way"

"The trip exceeded my expectations in every way. It really did. Your Escape Adventures team were just fabulous, the ratio of riding to rest days was great.  The rides were super-challenging but manageable which gave me a great sense of achievement, and cycling was indeed a wonderful way to see the landscape and way of life and interact with locals (thanks obviously to the relationships that have been developed and maintained). Plunger coffee, fabulous food and special birthday treatment?? Who’d have thought. So thanks very much."

Alice Melland, Ireland

Absolutely fantastic trip through Kenya and Tanzania with Escape Adventures"Absolutely Fantastic"

"Mary and I had an absolutely fantastic trip through Kenya and Tanzania with Escape Adventures. Every day was a new experience and few of them were too extreme. It was very humbling to see how happy the people were particularly the kids when they had so little. It really makes you appreciate what we have got back in NZ. It is really hard to describe to people how great the adventure was as it is hard to compare to what most people experience when they go overseas."

Bruce & Mary Thomas, New Zealand

Varied and interesting Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour"Every day a highlight"

"Absolutely every single day was a highlight because everything (terrain, sights and people) was so varied and interesting. I loved the huge variety, even the really hard days of sand-riding and challenging tracks. My all-time favourite camp was the River Camp, with the showers, bush babies, crocodiles, trees, lake…Beautiful in every way. And Amboseli is treasured in my memories because of the excitement of the animals all around us, the fire, the close tent circle to add excitement and plentiful water to wash clothes. Our tour leaders were AMAZING. Full of energy, caring, considerate, thoughtful, positive, cheerful, and didn’t stop working from first light til bedtime. OMG fabulous!"

Miranda Beuzenberg, New Zealand

Amazing cycle tour"Amazing"

The dry bush, the lush forest of the Usambara Mountains, the colourful Maasai people, the wildlife, the game parks and the local people we met along the way – always willing to smile, to laugh and to make us feel welcome in their country. So much variety packed into one trip, the most amazing experience you can have on a bike."

My Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour was absolutely brilliant

"Absolutely brilliant"

"The tour was absolutely brilliant!  We were very lucky with the weather and amount of wildlife we saw. My best bit was the giraffes we met on the road. I held back to enjoy a quiet moment alone - they just stand and stare back!  Our group all got on very well and we had a laugh.  The food was extremely good. It was nice to have nutritious meals and snacks.  Our tour leaders were excellent! They were always eager to help and check bikes, find out things for us, and the evening projections for the next day's cycle were the most informative I've had on any trips."

Susanne Bramson, UK

"Gold Standard"

"Brilliant! I have done supported tours in USA, Cuba, Brazil and Europe and this is the gold standard in terms of support, food, attention to detail, professionalism, friendliness etc. etc. I cannot recommend this company too highly. Go have fun!"
