Tropical Biking Tour for Adventurous Families

The Fiji Islands are very much defined by the vastness of the South Pacific Ocean which for a long time has provided both isolation and protection.  Made up of 332 volcanic islands, 110 of which are permanently inhabited Fiji is most famous as a tropical resort holiday destination.  Beyond the friendly faces in the well known upmarket resorts is a land of big hearted, laid back and genuinely welcoming people.  With deep traditional values both the Fijian and Indo-Fijian cultures are alive and kicking.

Our Fiji Islands Family Tour includes all that makes our regular tour special plus the added spark that comes from travelling with children in a country where everyone just loves kids! Picture subsistence villages, rain-forested mountains and quiet roads winding around a coastline of an unbelievably clear blue ocean edged with swaying coconut palms.  This is the Fiji we are heading for. We cycle across two of Fiji's larger, and less populated islands.  Starting in Vanua Levu we cycle across the island and on to Taveuni, aptly named the Garden Island. Add into the mix overnight village stays, reef snorkelling and plunging into crystal clear waterfall pools and you have the perfect mix for for a real tropical family adventure.

We have planned daily riding distances to be achievable for families and kids aged around 10-16.  We do understand that some teenagers/parents may enjoy more riding challenge.  As this tour is modeled from our ‘normal’ Fiji itinerary - on some days it will be possible to offer distances up to our full riding itinerary for those who wish.

Note: We require a minimum of 8 people to confirm a family cycle tour - so get your friends and family together and lock in your trip!

First of Many

Having just returned from Fiji with my 2 teenagers, I have had time to reflect on the awesome experience we all had. I wanted my kids to experience a different holiday away from screens and other mod cons. The trip was extremely well organised, safe, professional and with great integrity, whilst maintaining a friendly and easy going atmosphere. Great thought was put into each day in terms of accommodation, cycling, meals and other activities. We had the privilege of experiencing a more authentic Fiji, seeing less touristy areas and staying in a small village, amongst other things. The Escape Adventures crew were fantastic - friendly, funny and, most of all, kind, patient and supportive, particularly to my teenage daughter who was very anxious and a somewhat reluctant participant! We were also fortunate to meet another great family who we hope to maintain contact with. Thank you so much Leigh, Jason and Paul for a fabulous 9 days. I expect that I'll be a regular...

Fiji Family Adventure-2015

"What an awesome adventure! We had the best time ever with John, Baz, Mandy and Kier, exploring Fiji on our family tour. It wasn't the usual beach holiday many people go on, but we can't think of a better way to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays!

The cycling took us through diverse landscapes with lush green forests, beautiful hills and stunning beaches along the way. The roads we travelled were nice and quiet and allowed us to relax and enjoy the scenery along the way while covering a fair few K's in the process. We lost count of the number of friendly waves and "Bula" calls from the people along the way.  And if that wasn't enough, there was the hike, the village stays and the snorkeling which the kids loved, and allowed us to meet so many Fijians along the way. These were unique experiences that made the trip for our family.

John, Mandy and Baz – you guys are legends. Thoroughly professional guides that guaranteed us a fun and safe holiday, and now friends too.  We have the most amazing memories from our trip. It was an incredible experience for the whole family - we won't say once in a lifetime though because there is a lot more of the world to see, and what better way than on a bike with Escape Adventures!  Vinaka Escape Adventures and Fiji!!"

The Low-Down

Start: Labasa on Vanua Levu
Finish: Matei town on Taveuni Island

Group: You will join a fun bunch of 2-3 families from around the world, and we will strive to create a relaxed, fun and intimate group dynamic that feels like a group of friends on holiday.

Leaders: All of our cycle tours are led by two of our own wonderful New Zealand based Escape Adventures leaders, and a local guide or interpreter when necessary. We pride ourselves on the calibre and resourcefulness of these great people who you will be spending your holiday with.  Our leaders are all Emergency First Aid (PHEC) trained, passionate about biking, the outdoors, and focused on making sure you have a fun and safe adventure of a life-time.

Support: Your trusty support vehicle carries all your luggage, has lunch, snacks and water at hand, and is there if you need a break from the saddle.

The Biking:

We ride 15-60km per day; a total distance of 175-200km spread over six days of biking. The terrain is mostly rolling and flat with some ‘pinchy’ hills. The riding surface is paved and dirt roads which can be rough and pot-holed so a mountain bike with front suspension and semi-slick tyres is the ideal bike. The trip is suited to riders with a good level of biking fitness and being competent off-road will add to the enjoyment of your tour.

The Trekking:

The Lavena Coastal Walk  is an easy four hour coastal walk on a flat and rolling well made trail.

Food & Accommodation:

Meals and snacks are for the most part included throughout your tour with us; this excludes three lunches and three evening meals which are at your own cost to give you the opportunity to explore local cuisine of your own choosing. We are most definitely able to cater for vegetarians and special diets. Typical meals include:
Breakfasts - Hotel breakfasts and local village catering.
Lunches - Picnic style lunches and village catering.
Evening Meals - Village catering and local restaurants.

Accommodation includes six nights in hotels, one village stays and one night in a village lodge. You will need to bring along a sleep sheet or sleeping bag liner for the village stay and village lodge.
