Fiji Islands - 9 day Cycle Tour
Island hopping by bike... in tropical time!
Picture subsistence villages, rain-forested mountains and quiet roads winding around a coastline of an unbelievably clear blue ocean edged with swaying coconut palms. This is the Fiji we are heading for.
The Fiji Islands are very much defined by the vastness of the South Pacific Ocean which for a long time have provided both isolation and protection. Made up of 332 volcanic islands, 110 of which are permanently inhabited Fiji is most famous as a tropical resort holiday destination. But beyond the friendly faces in the upmarket resorts is a land of big hearted, laid back and genuinely welcoming people. With deep traditional values both the Fijian and Indo-Fijian cultures are alive and kicking. This is the Fiji we are heading for...
Ride, Hike, Snorkel, Swim and spend time with the most openly friendly people on earth. Come and explore the real Fiji with us! Our 9 day cycle tour takes us to two of Fiji's larger and less populated islands. Starting in Vanua Levu we cycle across the island and on up to the Island of Taveuni, aptly named the Garden Island. Add into the mix overnight village stays, reef snorkeling and plunging into crystal clear waterfall pools and you have the perfect mix for for a real tropical adventure. And yes, you may find an occasional pina colada along the way.....
Some people choose to extend their adventure by adding on the 3 day / 2 night Batilamu Trek (see below), or stay on and relax into Fiji island time...
"What an awesome adventure"
"What an awesome adventure! We had the best time ever on our family tour. It wasn't the usual beach holiday many people go on, but we can't think of a better way to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays!
The cycling took us through diverse landscapes with lush green forests, beautiful hills and stunning beaches along the way. The roads we travelled were nice and quiet and allowed us to relax and enjoy the scenery. We lost count of the number of friendly waves and "Bula" calls from the people along the way. And if that wasn't enough, there was the village stays and the snorkeling which the kids loved, and allowed us to meet so many Fijians along the way.
John, Mandy and Baz – you guys are legends. Thoroughly professional guides that guaranteed us a fun and safe holiday, and now friends too. We have the most amazing memories from our trip. It was an incredible experience for the whole family - we won't say once in a lifetime though because there is a lot more of the world to see, and what better way than on a bike with Escape Adventures! Vinaka Escape Adventures and Fiji!!"

"Travel at its best! Such a happy time"
"I have just returned from my sixth tour with Escape Adventures and Fiji did not disappoint! Many of us travel to Fiji for a week of relaxation within the confines of a resort. Escape Adventures gives you a very different Fiji. The less populated Islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni are stunning; the people are truly special and a common language helps you to feel at ease. What did I enjoy most? Was it the eye-popping snorkelling on a world famous reef? Was it the physical beauty of these Islands and their villages? Was it the thrill of the downhills on volcanic terrain? No..it was the opportunity to mingle with locals; to experience their unique culture and their very warm hospitality. Our home-stay with the people in an isolated village in Vanua Levu was the highlight for me. Travel at its best! Such a happy time."

"We feel as though we have seen the real Fiji"
"We thoroughly enjoyed it. We feel as though we have seen the real Fiji, not just from a tourist point of view. The experiences we will remember – the beautiful, friendly Fijian people, our cycling companions and leaders, the Village and Lodge stays (out of our comfort zone), even the hotels which were very different in standard to what we have come to expect from a hotel provided their own unique experience and were very much part of whole “Fiji Experience”.

"The Real Fiji"
“Bula” – that’s hello in Fijian and if you are planning on doing this trip then it’s one word that you will hear a lot of. The Fijian people are some of the friendliest in the world; this coupled with great scenery, some spectacular snorkeling and experiencing the “real Fiji” and makes this trip really worthwhile. This cycling tour is a great chance to see this country not through the usual tourist destination image but through engagement with the locals, understanding their culture, how they live their lives resulting in us feeling extremely privileged to be a part of it. While some of the cycling was a bit challenging we were nearly always rewarded with a swim in either extraordinary clear fresh water falls, amazing beaches or snorkeling in the most exquisitely coloured coral dive spots. The pace of this trip is a little slower than other Escape Adventure trips but once you are in Fiji you are on Fijian time!"

Start: Labasa on Vanua Levu
Finish: Matei town on Taveuni
Group: You will join a fun bunch of 6-12 bikers from around the world, and we will strive to create a relaxed, fun and intimate group dynamic that feels like a group of friends on holiday.
Leaders: All of our cycle tours are led by two of our own wonderful New Zealand based Escape Adventures leaders, and a local guide or interpreter when necessary. We pride ourselves on the calibre and resourcefulness of these great people who you will be spending your holiday with. Our leaders are all Emergency First Aid (PHEC) trained, passionate about biking, the outdoors, and focused on making sure you have a fun and safe adventure of a life-time.
Support: Your trusty support vehicle carries all your luggage, has lunch, snacks and water at hand, and is there if you need a break from the saddle.
We ride 20-60km per day; a total distance of 250km spread over six days of biking. The terrain is mostly rolling and flat with some ‘pinchy’ hills. The riding surface is paved and dirt roads which can be rough and pot-holed so a mountain bike with front suspension and semi-slick tyres is the ideal bike. The trip is suited to riders with a good level of biking fitness and being competent off-road will add to the enjoyment of your tour.
The Lavena Coastal Walk is an easy four hour coastal walk on a flat and rolling well made trail.
Food & Accommodation:
Meals and snacks are for the most part included throughout your tour with us; this excludes one lunch and three evening meals which are at your own cost to give you the opportunity to explore local cuisine of your own choosing. We are most definitely able to cater for vegetarians and special diets. Typical meals include:
- Breakfasts - Hotel breakfasts and local village catering.
- Lunches - Picnic style lunches and village catering.
- Evening Meals - Village catering and local restaurants.

The Batilamu Trek
~ a 3 day / 2 night / add on ~

The Batilamu Trek is a wonderfully rustic 3-day village run adventure trekking up and over the belly of Mt Batilamu the region’s great sleeping giant. Follow your hardy Fijian guide up a historic trading track which climbs steeply up through grasslands and rainforest to overnight in a rustic mountain hut with stunning views back down to the plains and outer islands. The second day brings you down to overnight in the stunning and tranquil Navilawa Village where you will enjoy the night socialising with your hosts.
The trail is uneven and steep in places with exposed sections and is suitable for confident walkers.
